Bowling for the Beginner

The first thing that every bowling in the early stages should do is practice. Practice is crucial and also must be done correctly if you want to steadily improve your game and get it to the level that you desire. I have compiled some tips, techniques and insight to get your game to the Next Level.

Equipment

When choosing your equipment there are a few things that should be taken into consideration. Your first purchase would be shoes, paying close attention that you purchase a sturdy and comfortable pair. Your ball should be drilled specifically for you and not be too heavy, otherwise you may feel discomfort or pain when throwing it. You may be inclined to purchase other accessories also; the only other thing I recommend to get started would be a bowling towel.

Practice

The key to practice is to make sure that you are practicing good and proper fundamentals and techniques. First would be the arm swing, if you can learn proper form here, it will aid in the rest of your practice and improvement. Try and use a 5 step approach, if you are not there to start, keep working on this. That will give you better timing in the long run. Another helpful hint is to not get overwhelmed and over think every shot. Stay relaxed, but focused when practicing.

Practice your spares; this can dramatically improve your game. Bowlers often worry too much about getting strikes and then forget about spares. When picking up most spares you want to throw the ball straight at the pins, this makes spare conversions much easier. A lot of bowlers will also have a second ball that they use for spares. That decision will be up to you.

Remember, spares are important. You need strikes to shoot the big scores. Your first ball or strike ball should be thrown the same way every time. This is where practicing your consistency will come into play. You must make sure that you are working on and visualizing the same first ball every time.

Leagues

Practicing on your own is great, but sometimes the best practice and improvement happens during league bowling. When practicing on your own you do not have anyone to watch you or help you for that matter. Find a "buddy" on a league that can help you improve your game. Work on the fundamentals and have fun doing it. League bowling is fun, but there is also a little bit of added pressure. If you can bowl well in league situations then practice will be a strike.

The best advice that I can give to any bowler is to have fun and enjoy yourself. We bowl for fun and it does not put food on our tables, so enjoy yourself.
